The city has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Named in honour of Lord Jeffrey Amherst, a British Army officer, Amherstview began as farmland in the early 19th century, primarily supporting Loyalist families who settled in the area after the American Revolution. It was mostly an agricultural area until the 20th century when it grew into a residential community.

Loyalist Township has big plans for Amherstview over the next 25 years. Through the Secondary Plan, they plan to nearly double Amherstview’s population by 2046 and build new parks, natural environment areas, a connectivity plan with roads, pathways and municipal water and sewer extensions. This means more opportunities for work and play without the high costs you’d face in a bigger city.
If you particularly love the outdoors, Amherstview is truly the place for you. Parrott’s Bay Conservation Area is a go-to, with over 117 hectares of protected land where you can hike, fish, and take in beautiful waterfront views. The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail is a 3,600 kilometre biking and walking trail that runs through the city.
